7 Tips for Tipping Your Taxi Cab Driver

Not sure how much to tip your taxi driver? We’ve compiled a list of helpful etiquette tips so you always feel confident and courteous when taking a ride.

  • 1. Give Them a Tip (When They Deserve It)

If your driver was on time, courteous, and professional, a tip is definitely appropriate. Your driver will appreciate the acknowledgment!

  • 2. Tip at Least 10% or Not at All

A good rule is 10% minimum. For fares under $10, give at least a full dollar to avoid awkwardness or inconvenience.

  • 3. Tip More if They Help with Luggage

Helpful, friendly drivers who go the extra mile deserve more. Tip 20% or higher for service that includes luggage assistance or great conversation.

  • 4. Don’t Ask for Change

Round to the nearest dollar to keep things simple, especially if you’re paying in cash.

  • 5. Tip Based on Ride Quality

Gauge the ride. Okay ride = 10%, average = 15%, great = 20%. Bad ride? No tip sends a message.

  • 6. Pay Attention to the Route

Was your driver efficient? Did they avoid traffic and take smart detours? Consider this when tipping.

  • 7. Tip Uber and Lyft Drivers, Too

App-based rides are still services! If possible, tip in cash and treat them with the same respect.
